Rivers ALGON Warns of Potential Unrest by Former Local Government Chairmen

Supports Police Measures to Protect Council Secretariats

The Rivers State chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has issued a stern warning against the immediate past chairmen of local governments in the state, accusing them of plotting to incite violence through a planned protest.

In a press briefing held on Sunday, Hon. Ichemati Ezebunwo, representing the 23 Local Government Council Caretaker Chairmen, revealed that the former chairmen, whose tenures recently ended, are allegedly collaborating with former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and National Assembly members loyal to FCT Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, to orchestrate mayhem in the state.

Ezebunwo detailed that credible information indicates the group intends to protest against the police, using the opportunity to create disorder in the state. He urged the public to reject such malevolent plans, emphasizing that the instigators would be held accountable for any resulting disruption.

"The planned protest is not in the interest of the local government areas or the state as a whole. It is a calculated attempt by the enemies of the state to paint Rivers in a negative light, incite violence, and support their unjustified calls for a state of emergency," Ezebunwo stated.

ALGON declared its unwavering support for the police in their efforts to maintain control and protect all local government area secretariats until further notice. The association distanced itself from the protest, labeling it harmful to the state's progress and the well-being of its residents.

"We, the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, and our people, fully support the police's decision to safeguard all local government area secretariats," Ezebunwo asserted.

Ezebunwo urged law-abiding citizens to ignore the planned protest and continue with their normal activities. He emphasized that any breakdown of law and order resulting from the protest would be the responsibility of its organizers and sponsors.

He also expressed gratitude to the people of Rivers State for their ongoing support of Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara's administration, which is committed to delivering democratic dividends.

"We wish to place on record that should there be a breakdown of law and order as a result of the planned protest, the organizers and their sponsors should be held responsible," Ezebunwo warned.

As tensions rise in Rivers State, ALGON's proactive stance aims to preempt any potential unrest and ensure the continued stability and progress of the state. The association's support for police measures highlights their commitment to maintaining peace and order amid political turmoil.
