Finnish Police Arrest Simon Ekpa on Terror Charges

Finnish authorities have detained Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian separatist leader, along with four others on terrorism-related charges, including incitement to violence and the financing of terrorism. The arrests were part of an extensive investigation by the Finnish Central Criminal Police.

Charges and Allegations

Ekpa, who has been vocal about his support for separatist activities in Nigeria’s South-East region, was remanded by the Päijät-Häme District Court. He faces charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent, according to Finnish news outlet Yle. The police allege that Ekpa used social media platforms to promote and coordinate violent activities targeting civilians and authorities in Nigeria.

Detective Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen, who leads the investigation, stated, “The man has carried out this activity, among other things, on his social media channels.”

Other Suspects and Terrorism Financing

The Finnish police revealed that the four other suspects, two of whom are based in Helsinki, were arrested for allegedly financing terrorist activities. This marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation, which has relied heavily on international collaboration.

Ekpa’s History with Authorities

This is not the first time Ekpa has drawn the attention of Finnish law enforcement. In 2023, he was briefly detained over allegations of fundraising fraud. His controversial statements and calls to disrupt Nigerian elections have also placed him at the center of separatist movements.

In one widely circulated 2023 video, Ekpa declared, “No elections will be held! Nigerian elections will not be allowed in Biafran territory.” Such rhetoric has heightened tensions in the South-East region, where his influence has been a source of concern.

Coordinated International Efforts

Finnish authorities emphasized the importance of cross-border cooperation in building the case against Ekpa and his associates. Hearings for the suspects are scheduled to take place on Thursday as the investigation continues to unfold.

This arrest underscores the growing global attention on terrorism financing and its implications for international security.
