Nigerian Judge Caught Trying to Steal Money from Frozen Bank Account of Petitioner

In a startling revelation, the Kano Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken severe disciplinary actions against three magistrates and a registrar from the Kano High Court over allegations of misconduct. Among these actions, a notable case involved a magistrate attempting to steal funds from a frozen bank account.

The disciplinary actions were disclosed in a statement by Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, the JSC spokesman. The JSC's 72nd meeting, held on June 11, 2024, reviewed several petitions against the judicial officers. The magistrates in question include Chief Magistrate Talatu Makama, Senior Magistrate Rabi Abdulkadir, and Chief Magistrate Tijjani Saleh-Minjibir. Senior Registrar Abdu Nasir was also implicated in the investigation.

Chief Magistrate Talatu Makama was found guilty of multiple misconducts following an investigation by the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee. The most serious charge against her involved directing GTBank to transfer money from a petitioner’s frozen account into her personal account, an act she admitted. Additionally, she was found guilty of judicial bias and making unauthorized orders to the police before cases were officially assigned to her.

As a result, the commission decided to immediately relieve her of all judicial duties and recall her from the bench. This decision underscores the JSC’s commitment to maintaining high standards of judicial conduct and integrity within the legal system.

Senior Magistrate Rabi Abdulkadir was found guilty of judicial recklessness. Consequently, she has been relieved of her judicial duties for one calendar year and has been ordered to cease all activities at Magistrate Court No. 48.

Senior Registrar Abdu Nasir was found guilty of serious misconduct by receiving payments meant for court records into his personal account. He received a strong warning, and his promotion has been deferred for one year.

Chief Magistrate Tijjani Saleh-Minjibir faced serious charges of judicial recklessness and misconduct. The commission found his responses to the queries unsatisfactory and recalled him from judicial duties for one year. He has been directed to report to the Kano High Court for posting.

The JSC emphasized its ongoing commitment to applying appropriate sanctions against any erring judicial staff. These measures aim to safeguard the integrity and accountability of the judicial system, thereby maintaining public confidence.

The actions taken by the Kano Judicial Service Commission serve as a stern warning to all judicial officers to uphold the highest standards of conduct. The JSC’s dedication to preserving the integrity of the judiciary is crucial in ensuring justice and public trust.
