During the inauguration of the state's new Labour House on Monday, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State announced the approval of a revised minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants, effective May 1st, 2024. The move comes amidst a nationwide push by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for higher wages, driven by mounting concerns over escalating inflation rates. March 2024 witnessed a surge in inflation to 33.2 per cent, up from 31.70 per cent in February, with food inflation reaching 31.7 per cent, exacerbating the economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers. In response to the demands raised by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for a minimum wage of N615,000, President Bola Tinubu convened a 37-member panel in January, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, tasked with proposing a new national minimum wage. The panel, comprising representatives from federal and state governments, the private sector, and organised labour, was mandated to expedite its deliberations

While most contractors have cooperated with the EFCC, one elusive woman, who received over N1 billion, has reportedly converted all funds into USD, complicating the investigation further. In a twist, contractors confessed to receiving kickbacks totaling approximately N1 billion, allegedly to evade EFCC inquiries.
