No Request Was Brought to NASS for Presidential Jet Purchase — Sen Abaribe

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, a prominent member of Nigeria’s National Assembly, has debunked claims that a proposal to purchase a new presidential jet was ever presented to the legislative body for approval. His remarks come amidst growing public discourse on government spending and transparency.

Addressing the allegations, Abaribe emphasized that any expenditure of such magnitude requires due legislative process. "There has been no formal request brought to the National Assembly National Assembly members were not spared in the criticisms regarding the jet purchase, as many labelled them as rubber stamp easy approval of the Presidency’s request to purchase a new jet.

However, Senator Abaribe, who appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today, yesterday, said such a request was never brought to the National Assembly.

He said: “I am in the National Assembly, but I can tell you for a fact that nobody, quote me, nobody brought anything to the National Assembly to say please approve this for purchase of a new plane.

Speculations about the purchase of a new presidential jet have sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians questioning the government’s fiscal responsibility amid economic challenges. Critics argue that such an acquisition would be insensitive, given the nation’s pressing economic realities and the rising cost of living.

Senator Abaribe reiterated the importance of transparency in governance, urging the executive branch to prioritize communication and accountability. "It is essential for the government to openly engage with the people and ensure that any major expenditure reflects the nation’s needs and aspirations," he added.

Nigeria’s current economic climate, marked by inflation and dwindling revenues, has heightened scrutiny over government spending. Many citizens argue that resources should be directed toward critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure rather than perceived luxuries.

Senator Abaribe’s clarification underscores the vital role of the National Assembly in safeguarding public interest through legislative oversight. As debates on government spending continue, Nigerians call for greater accountability and a focus on addressing the nation’s economic challenges.
