Nigeria Could Have Been Better Under Peter Obi’s Leadership — Abaribe

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has expressed confidence that Nigeria would be in a better position today had Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate, emerged victorious in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, the Senator representing Abia South highlighted what he described as the shortcomings of the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu. According to Abaribe, the nation’s governance under Tinubu has been plagued by nepotism, a challenge he believes Obi’s presidency would have avoided.

“If Peter Obi had won, you probably would have seen a better Nigeria than what we are seeing today,” Abaribe stated. “He would not be as nepotistic as this government. That is just who he is; he empathizes with others and considers everyone equally.”

Abaribe criticized Tinubu’s appointment of four ministers from Ogun State, describing it as a clear example of nepotism. He argued that such actions foster division rather than unity within the nation.

The Senator also urged the people of the South-East region to prioritize self-reliance and take charge of their development rather than waiting for fairness from successive governments. “We, as a people, must recognize that it’s time to chart our path and not rely on the goodwill of others,” he said.

In addition to his views on governance, Abaribe welcomed the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra in exile. He described the arrest as a positive step towards addressing security challenges in the South-East. He also called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), suggesting that such a move could significantly reduce violence and unrest in the region.

Abaribe’s comments come at a time when debates about leadership, equity, and national cohesion continue to dominate public discourse. His remarks reflect growing dissatisfaction among some Nigerians with the current administration and a longing for inclusive governance.
