Wike Hails Justice Ariwoola as Paragon of Integrity and Legal Excellence
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has lauded the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, describing him as a man of integrity and exceptional wisdom, with a steadfast commitment to upholding the rule of law.
Wike delivered these remarks during the unveiling of Justice Ariwoola’s autobiography, "Judging with Justice," held in Abuja on Thursday. The Minister emphasized that Justice Ariwoola’s legacy would be remembered as a significant chapter in Nigeria’s judicial history, highlighting his journey from the bar to becoming the Chief Justice of Nigeria as one marked by perseverance, brilliance, and an unwavering dedication to justice.
"This event is more than just the launch of a book; it is a celebration of a life devoted to the service of justice, fairness, and equity," Wike remarked. He continued by noting that Justice Ariwoola’s influence on the Nigerian legal system is profound, having not only interpreted the law but also shaped its practice in ways that will continue to resonate for generations.
Throughout his career, Justice Ariwoola has delivered rulings that have reinforced the rule of law, safeguarded democratic principles, and protected human rights in Nigeria. His journey, as detailed in the autobiography, is a testament to his dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the core values of the Nigerian legal system.
"In a nation as diverse and complex as ours, the judiciary plays a pivotal role in maintaining justice and ensuring that fairness prevails," Wike stated. He further underscored that the Chief Justice's role extends beyond interpreting the law to also upholding the integrity of the judiciary, ensuring that justice remains impartial and balanced.
Acknowledging the substantial contributions of the outgoing CJN to both the judiciary and the nation, Wike noted that Justice Ariwoola has significantly shaped legal thought in Nigeria. Among his many contributions is his leadership in advocating for a 300 percent increase in judges’ remuneration, a move aimed at bolstering the independence and effectiveness of the judiciary.
"Under Chief Justice Ariwoola's leadership, the judiciary has seen remarkable improvements in the welfare and working conditions of judges," Wike noted. He highlighted the 300 percent salary increase as a landmark achievement that reflects Ariwoola’s commitment to ensuring that the judiciary remains independent, resourceful, and motivated.
Moreover, Justice Ariwoola has been instrumental in enhancing the housing facilities available to judges at various levels, including the recent approval of residences for justices of the Court of Appeal, the Federal High Court, and the FCT courts, further solidifying his legacy as a leader dedicated to the well-being of the judiciary.
