NNPCL Cleaner Dies While on Duty in Rivers State, Family Suspects Foul Play and Demands Investigation

A tragic incident occurred in Rivers State where a contract staffer with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), identified as Asher Christopher, lost his life while on duty. The 23-year-old reportedly fell from a five-story building on Tuesday, leading to his untimely death.

The circumstances surrounding Christopher's death have left his family deeply concerned, prompting them to call for a thorough investigation. The father of the deceased, Christopher Dan, expressed his shock and frustration, noting that as of Thursday, he had yet to see his son's body.

Recounting the events, Dan explained, "On Tuesday around 4:15 p.m., one of my sons informed me that a colleague of Asher had contacted him, asking me to visit the Old GRA Police Station because the police needed to see me. When I inquired about the situation, my son said he didn’t know the details."

Upon arriving at the police station, Dan was unable to find his son's name on any list. After persistent inquiries, he was directed to the Surveillance Office at the Old GRA Police Station. However, the lack of information and the delay in accessing his son's remains only added to his distress.

On Wednesday, the police accompanied Dan and his wife to NNPCL’s facility on Moscow Road, where the incident allegedly took place. When Dan requested to see the exact spot where his son had fallen, he was met with uncertainty. "They couldn't specify if he fell from the second, third, or any other floor. When I finally saw the place, there were no signs that someone had fallen from that height," Dan said, casting doubt on the official narrative.

The Rivers State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and stated that the matter was reported to the Old GRA Police Division, with an investigation currently underway.

Meanwhile, Prince Wiro, the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, has called for a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth behind Christopher's death. Wiro also questioned why the incident was not reported to the Central Police Station, which oversees the jurisdiction where the event occurred.

As the investigation continues, Christopher’s family remains in anguish, seeking clarity and justice for their son.
