Tinubu Offers Ex-INEC Chairman Jega a New Appointment

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to a significant new role. On Tuesday, at the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms held at the presidential villa in Abuja, Tinubu named Jega as co-Chairman of the committee.

The committee's mandate is to address challenges in agricultural productivity and create new opportunities for farmers, herders, processors, and distributors within the livestock farming sector. Tinubu emphasized the non-political nature of this initiative, focusing solely on national development and the enhancement of the livestock value chain.

“From here, I will appeal to everyone to remove every iota of partisan politics from this. I will assume the chairmanship of the committee as President and appoint Professor Attahiru Jega as my deputy or co-chair,” President Tinubu announced.

He continued, “This is not about politics; this is about opportunity. This is about our nation. While I may be absent, Jega will preside and continue to promote our objectives.”

Tinubu highlighted the expertise of the committee members, suggesting the establishment of a new Ministry of Livestock Development to further the initiative's goals. This ministry would provide veterinary doctors with access to research and cross-breeding programs, aiming to modernize livestock farming practices and reduce conflicts related to livestock management.

“The calibre of people that are here presents a unique opportunity to delineate and establish a centric ministry called the Ministry of Livestock Development. It will give us the opportunity so that our veterinary doctors can have the necessary access to research and cross-breed. We can stop the wanton killings,” Tinubu said.

He noted the need for a comprehensive review and repositioning of traditional livestock farming methods, with collaboration from state governments and other stakeholders, to foster growth and prosperity in the sector.
