Peter Obi Demands Retraction and Apology from Bayo Onanuga Over Defamation Claims

Peter Obi, the Labour Party's Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, has issued a legal threat against Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Strategy. Obi demands a public retraction and apology from Onanuga for allegations made against him concerning a planned mass protest in August.

On July 20, 2024, Onanuga alleged via his X account, @aonanuga1956, that supporters of Peter Obi were orchestrating chaos in Nigeria and implied that Obi should be held accountable. In response, Obi's legal team, led by Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN of MADIBA Chambers, denounced these accusations, highlighting that they were widely disseminated across various media platforms, thereby tarnishing Obi's reputation as a peace-loving individual.

The legal notice from Obi’s counsel stated, "The publication appears to be a deliberate attempt to defame, humiliate, and ridicule our client before the public." It further emphasized the distress caused by the widespread circulation of these defamatory remarks, noting that well-wishers globally have expressed their dismay at the unfounded allegations.

Obi, known as 'Okwute' (the Rock), has been particularly affected by the publication's impact on his emotional well-being, given his longstanding commitment to non-violence and integrity in both private and public spheres.

The legal demand insists that Onanuga retract his statements and issue an unreserved apology within 72 hours in four major national newspapers: Vanguard, THISDAY, Punch, and The Cable, as well as on his verified X account. Additionally, Obi seeks N5 billion in damages for the reputational harm inflicted upon him and his family.

Should Onanuga fail to meet these demands, Obi’s legal team has warned of impending legal action for defamation and libel.
