Over 90 Pupils in Abuja School Sit on Bare Floor, Urgent Action Demanded by Civic Group

Amid a backdrop of political disagreements between Nyesom Wike and Senator Ireti Kingibe, a pressing issue has come to light: over 96 pupils at LEA Primary School in the Kigbe community of the Kwali Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja are forced to sit on the bare floor during their lessons.

This alarming situation was highlighted in a post shared on Tuesday by the civic tech platform, Monitng. The group is calling for immediate intervention from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Senator Ireti Kingibe. The post read: "Dear @GovWike & @IretiKingibe, Inside Abuja School Where Pupils Sit On Bare Floor. A local authority school located in LEA Primary School, Kigbe community, Kwali Area Council, FCT Abuja. Over 96 pupils sit on bare floors in their classrooms to learn."

This call for action comes amid a heated exchange between Wike and Kingibe. Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has publicly challenged Senator Ireti Kingibe, suggesting she will not be re-elected in 2027. This followed Kingibe's criticism of Wike's performance, where she claimed that FCT residents are dissatisfied with his efforts.

Senator Kingibe, a representative of the Labour Party, had pointed out in an Arise TV interview that the FCT suffers from a lack of essential amenities, including schools, hospitals, and potable water. In response, Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, defended his tenure and predicted that Kingibe would lose support in the upcoming elections due to her lack of cooperation with the FCT Administration and her apparent frustration with the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

At the Mabushi Bus Terminal flag-off in Abuja, Wike remarked on Kingibe’s comments: “I overheard somebody on Arise TV this morning. Unfortunately, I hear the person is a member of the National Assembly and it is unfortunate I say so. With all due respect, what you don’t know, you don’t know, what you know, you know, and the good thing for you is to tell people you don’t when you don’t know, then people will educate you. If we have done well, we have done well. If we haven’t done well, we haven’t done well. I am proud to say that in the short time that Mr. President has appointed us, we have done well.”

The civic group’s urgent plea emphasizes the dire need for improved educational facilities in the Kigbe community. With children’s learning environments severely compromised, there is a clear need for immediate action to provide proper furniture and enhance the overall educational infrastructure.

As political leaders engage in public disputes, the plight of students sitting on bare floors in classrooms remains an urgent issue that requires prompt and effective intervention. The call from Monitng for both Nyesom Wike and Senator Ireti Kingibe to address this situation highlights the critical need for political attention and resources to improve the learning conditions for these pupils.
