Governor Uba Sani Reinstates Monarch Dismissed by El-Rufai

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has reinstated Chief Jonathan Zamuna as the paramount ruler of Piriga in the Lere local government area, a position he was removed from by the previous administration. This decision underscores the significant role traditional institutions play in ensuring stability within the state and across Nigeria.


Chief Zamuna's removal on May 22, 2023, by then-Governor Nasir El-Rufai, occurred just before the end of El-Rufai's second term. In a recent session with the State Council of Chiefs on July 4, Governor Sani emphasized the importance of reinstating Zamuna and highlighted the essential roles of traditional rulers in governance and community security.


"The Traditional Institution has remained a stabilizing force in our communities and in the state as a whole," Governor Sani remarked. He noted the resilience of these institutions amid modernity and stressed that governments at all levels benefit from respecting and collaborating with traditional leaders to enhance governance and community security.


Governor Sani articulated his governance agenda, which includes fostering citizens' engagement. He acknowledged the influential role of traditional rulers in this process, stating, "Traditional Rulers are not only critical stakeholders but key influencers that must be accorded all the attention and respect deserving of their exalted position."


Reflecting on his past, Governor Sani described his longstanding respect for traditional institutions, dating back to his days as an activist. "During my days as an activist, I had a respectable and healthy relationship with the traditional institution," he said, reaffirming his commitment to maintaining strong ties with these leaders.


Governor Sani also highlighted his administration's inclusive approach, noting that critical stakeholders, including traditional rulers, have been actively involved in strategic objectives. He reassured the traditional rulers of ongoing open dialogue concerning the state's development and security.


As a testament to his commitment to the rule of law, Governor Sani announced the state's compliance with a court judgment issued on June 10, 2024, which restored Chief Jonathan Zamuna to his position. "Our doors remain wide open for continued interaction on issues of development and security of our State," the governor concluded, emphasizing his administration's dedication to upholding judicial decisions and engaging with traditional institutions for the state's benefit.
