Favour Ofili's Paris 2024 Olympic Dreams in Jeopardy Due to Administrative Blunder
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has been left in disbelief over the exclusion of sprinter Favour Ofili from the 100m event at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. Ofili, the current Nigerian 100m champion, was taken aback when she discovered that her name was missing from the competitors' list for the 100m race, leading her to accuse the AFN of a deliberate omission.
Responding to Ofili’s claims, AFN Technical Director Samuel Onikeku expressed the federation's surprise at the situation. "We registered Ofili for the 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m relay. We don't know how her name got missing in the 100m. This is our stand as a federation," Onikeku stated in a message to AFN Media.
It has been confirmed that the AFN submitted Ofili's name for all three events in their final list to the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC). However, the reasons behind her omission from the 100m event remain unclear. Ofili had secured her place by running an impressive 11.06 seconds at the Nigerian Olympics Trials in Benin City. Notably, she has focused more on the 100m this season, recording wind-aided times of 10.85 and 10.78 seconds.
Taking to social media, Ofili expressed her frustration and disappointment. "It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 meters at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for 4 years to earn this opportunity," she wrote.
Ofili’s outcry highlights ongoing issues within Nigerian athletics administration. She pointed out similar problems at the last Olympic Games, where 14 Nigerian athletes were unable to compete due to administrative failures. "If those responsible are NOT held accountable for taking this opportunity from me, neither organization can EVER be trusted in the future!" Ofili added, expressing hope that she will at least be entered for the 200m event.
The AFN and NOC now face increased scrutiny as they work to resolve this issue and ensure that such administrative errors do not recur, thereby protecting the dreams and careers of their athletes.
