Video: Fatal Accident on Lagos' Third Mainland Bridge: One Dead, Three Rescued

In a tragic incident on Lagos' Third Mainland Bridge, one person was confirmed dead following a collision between a mini truck and a Toyota Camry early Saturday morning. The accident, involving a mini truck (MUS 489 XS) and a Toyota Camry (KRD 470 JD), occurred during a heavy downpour and was attributed to excessive speeding.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary investigations indicated that the excessive speed was a key factor in the accident. The crash took place near the Unilag waterfront, en route to the Iyana-Oworonsoki area of Lagos.

Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, stated in a LASTMA press release that three individuals were successfully rescued at the scene. The swift response from LASTMA operatives ensured that those involved received immediate assistance. The deceased was removed by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) officials, and the vehicles involved were quickly cleared to prevent further traffic disruptions on the busy bridge.

Despite ongoing efforts by the Lagos State government to educate motorists about adhering to speed limits, many drivers continue to violate the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. Mr. Giwa emphasized the critical need for both commercial and private drivers to comply with speed regulations to prevent such accidents. He reiterated the government's commitment to road safety and the continuous enforcement of traffic laws.

Mr. Giwa extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, stressing the importance of adhering to road safety measures. The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of excessive speeding, particularly in adverse weather conditions.
