Tinubu Orders Refunds and Punishments for Civil Servants Receiving Salaries Abroad

Tinubu Cracks Down on Civil Servants Receiving Salaries Abroad

President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern directive that all civil servants who have relocated abroad but continue to draw salaries from the Nigerian government must refund the money. Additionally, the president has mandated that their supervisors and department heads be held accountable for aiding and abetting this fraudulent activity.

The announcement was made by President Tinubu on Saturday during the award night organized by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF) to commemorate the 2024 Civil Service Week. The event was also aimed at honoring outstanding civil servants in core ministries.

President Tinubu expressed his dismay at the discovery of civil servants who have relocated abroad yet continue to receive salaries without formally resigning from their positions. He emphasized the need for accountability and restitution.

“During my recent visit to South Africa, I kept abreast of the week’s activities. I was particularly struck by the revelations shared by the head of the civil service regarding employees who had relocated abroad while drawing salaries without formally resigning,” the president stated.

President Tinubu highlighted the steps being taken to address this issue and stressed the importance of ensuring those responsible are held accountable.

“It is heartening to hear that measures have been taken to address this issue, but we must ensure those responsible are held accountable and restitution is made. The culprits must be made to refund the money they have fraudulently collected. Their supervisors and department heads must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch,” Tinubu declared.

The president reiterated that the government would take appropriate measures to punish the offenders and ensure that the fraudulent salaries are refunded to the government treasury.

President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by the civil service sector and reiterated his commitment to addressing them to ensure optimal performance.

“Our administration acknowledges the challenges the civil service is facing. I want to give you the assurance that we are committed to ensuring the welfare and development of all civil servants to deliver optimal performance for the growth of our nation,” he said.

Over the past year, the president has provided support to the head of the civil service of the federation to ensure the stability and efficiency of the civil service. This includes implementing policies and reforms aimed at improving service delivery and overall efficiency.
