Northern Politicians Visit Former President Buhari: A Prelude to 2027 Presidential Elections?

In a week marked by significant political movements, several prominent Northern politicians visited the Daura residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari. These visits, occurring during the Sallah celebrations, have sparked speculations about potential alliances for the 2027 Presidential elections.

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), visited Buhari alongside Aminu Tambuwa and other party stakeholders. Atiku shared on his X handle:

"Accompanied by some stakeholders of our great party, the @OfficialPDPNig, we visited the Daura residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari to pay a courtesy call and offer Sallah homage. -AA."

Aminu Tambuwa also tweeted about the visit, emphasizing the significance of the Sallah homage:

"Earlier today, I joined H.E. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar GCON (Wazirin Adamawa), the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the @OfficialPDPNig in the last elections, along with other stakeholders, on a courtesy visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR. We paid Sallah homage during this visit. -AWT"

Following Atiku's visit, Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, also paid a visit to Buhari. Hon. Umar Rimaye tweeted:

"Something big is cooking in Katsina. After Sallah visit of @atiku in Daura yesterday, early today Mallam Nasir El-Rufai paid Sallah visit to Muhammad Buhari."

The series of visits continued with Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, the ex-Governor of Borno State, who also visited Buhari in Daura. A Twitter user, @imranmuhdz, noted:

"The ex-Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, visited former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State to pay his Sallah homage."

He further tweeted:

"The former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasiru El-Rufai, pays a visit to ex-President Buhari in Daura, Katsina State."

These visits, seemingly centered around Sallah celebrations, have fueled speculations about the political maneuvers underway in the North. Many observers believe these meetings could be the groundwork for a Northern alliance ahead of the 2027 Presidential elections. The possibility of forming a strong coalition to influence the political landscape in Nigeria has been a topic of much discussion.

Twitter user @novieverest offered a different perspective on Atiku's visit:

"Atiku is trying to play a game. Hardship in Nigeria has more than tripled since 2023. His visit to Buhari was simple. Some Northerners looking at what they are going through now will feel Buhari was heaven-sent and performed wonderfully well. So Atiku just sent a message. I can make you feel better like when Buhari your brother was here."

The recent visits to former President Buhari by key Northern politicians have left many Nigerians speculating about their true intent. While officially described as Sallah homage, the timing and the high-profile nature of these visits suggest they may be laying the groundwork for future political strategies. As Nigeria heads towards the 2027 Presidential elections, the political landscape is poised for interesting developments, and these visits could be a precursor to significant alliances and shifts in the country's political arena.
