NDLEA Raids Snake-Guarded Shrine Used for Drug Storage in Edo State

In a dramatic and unusual operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) uncovered a snake-guarded shrine used for storing illicit drugs in the Igor community of Benin City, Edo State. This significant bust, which occurred on June 18, 2024, highlights the lengths to which drug traffickers will go to evade detection and the determination of the NDLEA to combat drug-related crimes.

During the operation, NDLEA operatives discovered a specially constructed large hole in a wall, hidden behind wallpapers and adorned with fetish objects. This concealed compartment was used to store various illicit drugs. According to a statement by Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media & Advocacy for NDLEA, the substances recovered included methamphetamine, Loud, Colorado, and Arizona, all potent strains of cannabis, with a total weight of 8.743kg.

“A snake-guarded shrine used to store illicit drugs in Igor community, Benin City, Edo State, has been raided by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, who detected a specially constructed large hole storage in a wall covered with wallpapers and fetish objects,” Babafemi reported.

The raid, which was intelligence-led, resulted in the arrest of two women, Sonia Chinonso Ezumezu and Risikatu Tijani. The black snake guarding the shrine was demobilized, allowing the NDLEA operatives to safely carry out the operation and recover the hidden drugs.

“At least, two ladies: Sonia Chinonso Ezumezu and Risikatu Tijani were arrested during the intelligence-led operation on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, after the big black snake guarding the shrine was demobilized,” Babafemi revealed.

This raid underscores the innovative and extreme measures that drug traffickers are employing to hide their operations. The use of a snake-guarded shrine is particularly notable, reflecting both the desperation and the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their illicit activities.

The NDLEA’s success in this operation is a testament to their ongoing commitment to eradicating drug trafficking in Nigeria. The agency’s ability to infiltrate such a uniquely protected stash house speaks to their effectiveness and dedication to maintaining law and order.

The discovery and subsequent seizure of such a large quantity of drugs will likely have a significant impact on the local drug trade in Edo State. By removing these substances from circulation, the NDLEA is not only disrupting the supply chain but also sending a strong message to other traffickers about the agency’s capabilities and resolve.

The NDLEA's raid on the snake-guarded shrine in Edo State is a landmark operation in the fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria. The agency's ability to uncover and dismantle such a uniquely protected storage site highlights their vigilance and dedication. As the NDLEA continues to crack down on illicit drug activities, the message is clear: innovative and extreme measures by traffickers will not deter the agency’s mission to protect Nigeria’s communities from the scourge of drugs.
