PDP Reconstitutes Edo State Campaign Council, Drops Wike

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has updated the membership of its Edo State Governorship Election National Campaign Council. Notably, the council now excludes FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former President Goodluck Jonathan, while retaining figures like Sim Fubara and Dan Orbih.

This decision has sparked debate among party members and political observers. Some argue that dropping Wike while retaining Orbih indicates deeper internal party dynamics and conflicts. There are speculations about the rationale behind these choices, especially given Wike's influential role in the party and his past contributions to its successes. Wike has been seen and openly supporting APC government as a member of Tinubu's cabinet and minister of FCT. Dan Orbih is also Wike's person and his continued influence in the party especially in Edo State in favor of the opposition cannot be overemphasised.

The updated council is chaired by H.E. Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, with H.E. Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori Francis and H.E. Dr. Kefas Agbu serving as deputy chairmen. The list includes prominent members like former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar and Arch. Nnamadi Sambo, as well as several governors and party stalwarts. Key figures retained include Siminalayi Fubara and Dan Orbih, whose continued inclusion is seen as significant given the recent exclusions.

The decision to exclude Wike and Jonathan has raised questions about the PDP's decision-making process and its ability to handle internal conflicts. Some party members believe this highlights the difficulty the PDP faces in making tough decisions at the national level. The exclusion of these high-profile figures could be indicative of attempts to realign the party’s strategies and address internal dissent.

Moreover, it is widely known that many PDP governors are covertly or overtly collaborating with President Bola Tinubu. This cooperation further complicates the party’s internal cohesion and strategic planning, as it navigates relationships both within the party and with the federal government.

For the past year, Edo State’s political landscape has been turbulent, with the house frequently opposing the governor and enacting laws to curtail his powers. This political friction has hindered governance and development in the state. The reconstitution of the campaign council and the ongoing legal battles regarding party defection add to the uncertainty.

The council is tasked with ensuring victory in the upcoming Edo State Governorship Election on September 21, 2024. How effectively the newly formed council can galvanize support and lead a successful campaign remains to be seen. The exclusion of influential figures like Wike and Jonathan could either signal a fresh strategic approach or lead to further internal discord.

As the PDP gears up for the Edo State elections, the reconstitution of its campaign council reflects broader challenges within the party. The exclusion of prominent figures like Wike and Jonathan underscores the complex dynamics at play. The party’s ability to navigate these challenges and present a united front will be crucial for its success in the upcoming elections and its overall stability moving forward.
