Killing of Soldiers in Aba: Abia State Government Places a N25 Million Bounty on Perpetrators

In a recent tragic incident on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at around 7:45 am, five soldiers were brutally killed at Obikabia Junction in the Ogbor Hill area of Obingwa LGA, near Aba. Suspected criminal elements, operating in several SUVs, opened fire on the Nigerian Army personnel who were on security duty. The Abia State Government has expressed deep regret over this heinous act and has placed a N25 million (Twenty-five Million Naira) bounty on anyone with information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

In a press statement released by Prince Okey Kanu, Hon. Commissioner for Information & Culture, the Government extended its condolences to the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed A. Lagbaja, and the entire Military High Command. They also prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the gallant soldiers who lost their lives in active duty.

As a testament to its commitment to security, safety, and peace, the Abia State Government views this attack as a serious affront to its efforts to maintain law and order. The incident is particularly disheartening given the significant investments made over the past year to enhance public infrastructure and position Aba as an attractive investment hub.

To reassure citizens and investors of their safety, the State Government has promised to exert the full force of the law on any individual or group posing a threat to peace and security. They have offered a reward of N25 million for information that could lead to the arrest of the criminals involved. Additionally, the Government has assured informants of complete confidentiality to ensure their safety and cooperation.

The Government also pledged to support the families of the fallen soldiers, including providing regular stipends to their spouses and ensuring the education of their children up to university level. This gesture is in recognition of the soldiers' bravery and sacrifice.

The Abia State Government commended the professionalism of the Nigerian Army's response to the incident and urged security personnel to continue showing restraint in their duties. They are working closely with security agencies, traditional, and community leaders to gather intelligence that will lead to the apprehension of the criminals.

Citizens are encouraged to continue their daily activities without fear, as the Government has implemented measures to ensure their safety. People with information on criminal activities are urged to report to security agencies promptly. Traditional and community leaders are also advised to set up local intelligence gathering mechanisms and regularly share information with security agencies. The Government warned that any leader found to be harboring criminals would face severe consequences.

The Abia State Government remains committed to supporting security agencies to protect lives and property. They reiterate their warning to criminal elements to stay away from Abia, emphasizing that the State will continue to be hospitable to law-abiding citizens and very hostile to those threatening its peace and security.
