Biafra Heroes Day: Police Mobilize Against IPOB Sit-At-Home Order in Anambra, Imo; Deploy Operatives to Schools and Other Key Locations

In response to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)'s declaration of a sit-at-home order on May 30th, commemorating Biafra Heroes Day, police forces in Anambra and Imo States have mobilized to ensure security and public order. This annual remembrance day, which honors those who lost their lives during the Biafran War, has generated significant tension across the southeastern region of Nigeria, particularly impacting educational institutions and scheduled public events.

In anticipation of the sit-at-home order, the Anambra State Police Command has taken proactive steps to safeguard schools and other vulnerable institutions. A statement from the state police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that a specialized security team, the “Operatives of Schools Protection Squad,” has been deployed across the state. This initiative, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations Department), aims to maintain law and order, particularly around educational establishments.

"The personnel dispatched have been tasked to intensify robust patrols around schools and vulnerable institutions in all the locations in the state," Ikenga stated. The team, part of a broader initiative by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, is equipped with advanced training and resources to respond effectively to any security challenges.

Parents and students, especially those scheduled to sit for the Mathematics exam in the ongoing West African Examinations Council (WAEC), have been on edge due to the potential disruptions. Additionally, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) graduates initially set to celebrate their convocation on the same day have also been affected by the tension.

Similarly, the Imo State Police Command has bolstered its security measures. According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Henry Okoye, security personnel have been deployed across the state to enforce law and order on May 30. This deployment aims to ensure that the sit-at-home order does not lead to public disorder or violence.

Despite the enhanced security presence, IPOB has reiterated its commitment to observing the sit-at-home order. The group has warned against any attempts to undermine the commemoration activities, including the planned convocation at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. IPOB's firm stance has further heightened the anxiety among residents and stakeholders in the region.

The Anambra State Police Command has advised the public, particularly parents, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or security-related incidents. For immediate assistance, residents can contact the police via the emergency number 07039194332 or use the 'npf rescue me app,' available for free download on both Android and Apple iOS platforms.

“Parents are warned to be conscious of their environment and report or call the above number in case of any emergency or unwarranted movements,” Ikenga added. This advisory underscores the need for heightened community awareness and cooperation with law enforcement agencies during this period.

As Biafra Heroes Day approaches, the concerted efforts by the police in Anambra and Imo States to maintain security and public order are commendable. The deployment of specialized security squads and the issuance of public advisories reflect the authorities' commitment to safeguarding lives and property. However, the persistent tension and IPOB’s unwavering stance highlight the complexities of managing such commemorative events in a region fraught with historical and political sensitivities. The hope is that these measures will ensure a peaceful observance of Biafra Heroes Day without compromising the safety and well-being of the residents.
