Biafra Day: We won’t confront sit-at-home promoters – Gov Otti

As the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) enforces its sit-at-home directive on Biafra Day, South East governors are taking decisive steps to protect citizens, particularly students currently sitting for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams. Governors from Anambra, Imo, and Abia states have made it clear that they will not tolerate any disruption caused by the sit-at-home order.

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has issued a stern warning against the enforcement of the sit-at-home order by IPOB members. He emphasized that any attempt to disrupt daily activities, particularly the WAEC examinations, would be met with strict resistance. Security agencies have been placed on high alert to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the exams.

"The government of Anambra State will not tolerate any form of intimidation or harassment of our citizens," Governor Soludo declared. "Students sitting for their WAEC exams will be provided with the necessary protection to ensure they can write their exams without molestation.

In Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodinma has echoed similar sentiments. The state government has reassured parents, students, and educational institutions that adequate security measures have been put in place. The aim is to ensure that the sit-at-home order does not interfere with the academic activities and safety of students.

"Our administration is committed to the safety and well-being of all our citizens," Governor Uzodinma stated. "We have engaged security forces to ensure that no harm comes to anyone participating in essential activities, including the ongoing WAEC exams."

In Abia State, Governor Alex Otti has chosen a more diplomatic approach to address the situation. Acknowledging the emotional significance of Biafra Day, Governor Otti has emphasized the importance of respecting the sentiments of those mourning their lost loved ones from the Nigerian Civil War. However, he has also prioritized the uninterrupted conduct of the WAEC exams.

"We recognize the right of individuals to mourn their loved ones, especially given the historical context of the civil war," Governor Otti stated through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma. "However, we are also committed to ensuring that the education of our children is not compromised."

Governor Otti revealed that the government is in active communication with schools to devise strategies that will allow students to write their exams without disruption. "We are engaging with all stakeholders to handle this situation with wisdom and diplomacy. While we respect the sentiments behind the sit-at-home order, we are also taking undisclosed measures to ensure peace and safety in Abia State," he added.

The collective efforts of the South East governors highlight a balanced approach to maintaining peace and order while respecting the rights of individuals to express their grief. Security measures are being heightened across the region to prevent any form of violence or disruption, ensuring that students can focus on their exams without fear.

As the sit-at-home directive by IPOB continues to pose challenges, the proactive steps taken by the governors of Anambra, Imo, and Abia states serve as a testament to their commitment to safeguarding the interests of their citizens. The focus remains on ensuring that essential activities, particularly the education of young minds, proceed without hindrance.
