Political Bombshell: PDP Chieftain Accuses Tinubu of Betraying el-Rufai and Yahaya Bello Despite Election Support

In a recent turn of political events, Segun Showunmi, a prominent figure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused President Bola Tinubu of betraying key allies within his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). These allegations have stirred considerable controversy, highlighting deep-seated issues of loyalty and support in Nigerian politics.

According to Showunmi, who ran as a gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State, President Tinubu failed to support Yahaya Bello and Nasir el-Rufai during their times of need, despite their substantial contributions to his election campaign. Both Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, and el-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, were notable for their vigorous support during the 2023 electoral process.

El-Rufai’s appointment as a ministerial nominee ended in disappointment when the Senate rejected him, a situation that could have been influenced by the President, suggests Showunmi. This rejection was particularly humiliating due to a negative security report, amidst claims that the Senate, which is populated by Tinubu’s supporters, could have been swayed in el-Rufai’s favor had the President intervened.

Yahaya Bello’s scenario is similarly contentious. Showunmi highlighted Bello's energetic campaign efforts, which were crucial in securing votes for Tinubu in Kogi State. Despite these efforts, Bello has faced legal challenges and public embarrassment, including being declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and placed on a watchlist by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

Showunmi’s statement underscores a broader perception of betrayal and manipulation within political ranks, reflecting on how such actions could affect Tinubu’s standing among his Yoruba base and broader political alliances. He warns of the potential long-term consequences of such betrayals, questioning the President’s disregard for the political and personal costs paid by his supporters.

These developments raise important questions about loyalty, gratitude, and the ethical conduct expected of political leaders, echoing broader concerns about the integrity of governance in Nigeria. As the situation unfolds, the political landscape remains tense with stakeholders watching closely to see how President Tinubu navigates these accusations and their implications for his administration and future political aspirations.
