INTERPOL Confirms It Had No Role in the Extradition of IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya.

INTERPOL has clarified that it was not involved in the extradition of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from Kenya. Garba Umar, the Vice President of INTERPOL Africa, emphasized this point during an interview with News Central TV.

The assertion came in response to reports linking INTERPOL to the 2021 detention of Kanu, instigated by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Contrary to previous claims involving INTERPOL's assistance, Umar confirmed that the international police organization had no hand in the actions leading to Kanu's return to Nigeria.

During the interview, Umar expressed confusion over the allegations, stating, “Believe you me, I want to tell you I don’t know what you are talking about. You are bringing an issue that INTERPOL is not aware of."

He continued to detail INTERPOL's role as a global entity that supports law enforcement in 196 countries in tracking fugitives. However, he made it clear that the organization was not notified or involved in Kanu's case specifically. “INTERPOL is not aware of this. We stated this long time ago and we made it categorically clear,” Umar added.

Umar also highlighted the distinction between different types of police cooperation, explaining that not all international law enforcement interactions fall under INTERPOL's purview. He noted, for example, that direct police-to-police communications might occur independently of INTERPOL.

Furthermore, he described the process behind issuing Red Notices, which are alerts used to communicate information on fugitives to law enforcement worldwide. Such notices are based on existing international warrants but were not utilized in Kanu’s situation according to Umar’s statements.

This denial by a high-ranking INTERPOL official seeks to dissociate the organization from the controversial capture and extradition of Kanu, clarifying its non-involvement in what has been a highly scrutinized operation.
